Thai-German seminar decodes transport carbon credit market for climate action
 
TGC EMC, in collaboration with the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), organised a seminar on the carbon credit trading system for Thai government officers in the transport sector.
The panel discussion featured real players, who shared their experiences in the carbon credit market.
This seminar was a joint effort by TGC EMC and the OTP to build the capacity of the actors in the transport sector to drive the sector to meet its NDC target.

KMUTT and GIZ Host Visit to Showcase Biomass Conversion Technologies

 
TGC EMC Biomass Component and its political partners visited KMUTT's pilot plant, spotlighting biomass to energy technologies to tackle agricultural burning.
Pelletisation is a promising alternative for farmers seeking to increase income and avoid open burning. The project aims to explore this further in the pilot area in Nakhon Sawan province.
The visit allowed participants to explore practical applications of these technologies for the benefit of Thai farmers. It also facilitated fruitful discussions and paved the way for future collaborations on sustainable energy solutions derived from agricultural residues.

CASE organises “Regional Workshop on Electricity Market Designs for Renewables in Southeast Asia”
 
Southeast Asian nations are all striving towards accelerated deployment of renewable energy to achieve net-zero emissions by or after 2050.
A regional workshop brought together stakeholders from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to discuss market mechanisms to increase the deployment of renewable energy.
The workshop explored how the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) could unlock greater utilisation of renewable energy across Southeast Asia.

H2Uppp supports Thailand and SEA’s shift to clean ammonia production
 
H2Uppp organised a workshop to present the results of the study on Green Ammonia and potential applications in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
The workshop offered a comprehensive analysis of the global potential for green ammonia applications, with a specific focus on SEA and Thailand's strategic role within the region.
Additionally, it provided valuable insights into both the promising technologies for ammonia production and utilisation, alongside the key challenges encountered in developing green ammonia projects.

Thailand's First Climate Change Act Strengthened Through Public Hearing, Affirms its Progressive Milestone
 
Held by the CCMB project in collaboration with DCCE, the public hearings for Thailand’s first Climate Change Act were hosted in February and March 2024 with more than 1,500 participants across the country.
The draft Act outlines various measures to achieve Thailand's climate goals. The Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) by public hearings ensures it effectively addresses environmental, economic, and social aspects.
This act aims to establishes various instruments to regulate carbon emissions, including Thailand’s Emission Trading System (ETS), carbon tax and carbon credit programme, and National Climate Change Fund. These mechanisms will further support the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.

CCMB facilitates the Climate Information Services Development in Thailand
 
Climate information services play an important role for Thailand in combating climate change, linking knowledge with action on the ground, which will contribute to climate resilience in various sectors.
In collaboration with the DCCE, the CCMB project organised the expert consultation meeting to take stock of current climate information operations and strengthen collaboration opportunities among climate modelers, including government agencies, academic institutions and international organisations.
The expert consultation meeting was a crucial step towards establishing a climate information network, with all participants agreeing to share information, knowledge, expertise, and experience on climate models.

Bridging the Gap: Urban-Act Integrates Gender and Inclusion into City Climate Action
 
GEDSI stands for Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion, which is a strategy aimed at ensuring that everyone can equally participate in development initiatives designed to create sustainable cities.
Urban-Act integrates GEDSI strategy to mainstream an inclusive approach across all project processes.
It is crucial to incorporate equity and inclusion in climate interventions to enhance urban climate resilience and sustainability.

SPOPP promotes diversity and equality in the agricultural sector
 
Despite agriculture being traditionally perceived as an exclusive domain for straight men, Pratya “Prat” Rattanabandit serves as a testament to how unwavering determination to learn can foster acceptance of gender diversity.
Empowered by the SPOPP project, Prat gained a comprehensive understanding of sustainable palm oil production and plantation management skills, enabling him to increase productivity.
Prat dedicates himself to sharing knowledge beyond his family, reaching over 400 farmers in the community and inspiring countless individuals through his unwavering commitment and passion.

Enhancing Irrigation Engineers’ Skills with Spatial Data Visualisation Techniques
 
GIZ, in collaboration with the Royal Irrigation Department, conducted technical training for water professionals from the Yom-Nan River basin, focused on integrating Climate Risk Vulnerability Assessments (CRVA) to implement Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures.
Participants learned to use Google’s Looker Studio, which helps irrigation engineers visualise complex CRVA data and produce CRVA maps, supporting more accurate decision-making.
Participants will mentor future CRVA training sessions within the RID, promoting data-driven decision-making, effective communication and the development of climate-sensitive planning skills, with the goal of expanding this knowledge to other river basins.

Thailand gets ready to transform national rice sector into sustainable, environmentally resilient production
 
The ISRL project held an inception workshop for all stakeholders to learn more about the objectives of the project, expected outcomes, outputs and planned activities at the national and provincial levels.
A network of Thai rice stakeholders dived deep into the details of the project and discussed the importance of working across agencies effectively.
The ISRL project will enable all stakeholders to transform rice and agricultural production landscapes by reconciling competing social, economic, and environmental interests.

Coffee++ Thailand project piloted to strengthen a network of regenerative agriculture, economic and environmental resilience
 
Coffee ++ Thailand project implemented by GIZ Thailand in collaboration with Nestle (Thai) organised the first training-of-trainers session on the topic “regenerative agriculture”.
Coffee productivity in Thailand used to be as high as 100,000 tonnes/year. However, this has drastically reduced due to policies and climate change. Coffee farmers are at risk of income and product loss due to prolonged drought.
The project aims to pass on knowledge to 2,200 targeted Robusta coffee farmers in four pilot southern provinces to improve their livelihoods, help them adapt to climate change, and contribute to mitigating the current global boiling crisis.

Coffee++ Project shared climate change knowledge at the Coffee Buying Stations in Chumphon and Ranong
 
Coffee++ Thailand Project implemented by GIZ Thailand in collaboration with Nestle (Thai) Ltd held awareness raising activities at the buying stations in Chumphon and Ranong provinces.
Project team members advocated coffee farmers on the cause of climate change and its impact on coffee production.
Soil aggregate stability testing sessions and rainfall simulation test were demonstrated to help farmers to be aware of the importance of soil health improvement.

BAAC-GIZ gears up joint efforts towards sustainable, climate-resilient finance for farmers
 
Representatives from the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and GIZ Thailand recently organised a workshop on agricultural climate-resilient financing.
The ‘BAAC – GIZ Strategic Alignment Planning Workshop’ marked the continued joint efforts by the two organisations to provide Thai smallholder farmers access to sustainable, climate-resilient farming management.
Participants not only exchanged views and opinions on the financing and development framework and concept, but also planned activities for ongoing collaborative projects.

Strengthening Thailand’s Low-Emission Rice Market: Learnings from the Thai Rice NAMA Project
 
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) organised the policy forum titled "Strengthening Thailand’s Low-Emission Rice Market: Learnings from the Thai Rice NAMA Project".
Key stakeholders discussed the critical developments and challenges in transitioning towards low-emission rice production in Thailand.
The Thai Rice NAMA project is a showcase initiative for transforming rice production systems in Thailand. Insights and lessons from the project are expected to enhance the forthcoming Thai Rice GCF project.

Representatives from ASEAN Member States gather in Regional Technical Meeting in Bali to enhance adoption of crop insurance across region
Exploring challenges and solutions for climate-resilient crop insurance, emphasising public-private partnerships, knowledge-sharing, and integration with regional climate resilience goals
Proposal for integrating crop insurance and innovative financing schemes into post-2025 ASEAN plan to strengthen regional cooperation for climate-resilient agriculture

German Delegation Visits the Sustainable Peatland Management Pilot Site in Malaysia
 
GIZ’s SUPA project welcomed a delegation from the German Parliament to give them insights into the preservation of the peat forest in Malaysia.
They visited the Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest (SEPPSF), the largest undisturbed peat forest in Peninsular Malaysia.
The delegates also learned about the ongoing conservation efforts, mitigation strategies, and community support initiatives.
