BANGKOK, 1 October 2014 – NAMA options were proposed to Policy Coordination and Implementation on Climate Change and Sustainable Transport Committee for the final decision. A preceding NAMA identification and prioritization process was carried out by in a collaboration between the GIZ Transport and Climate Change (TCC) project, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) and the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) and other relevant agencies. This resulted in a top four actions:
(i) Urban Public Transport Connectivity
(ii) Fuel Efficiency Policy (iii) Public Transport Management (iv) Non-urban Railway Improvement
Mrs. Soithip Trisuddhi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Chair of the meeting, along with the Committee members (e.g. National Economic and Social Development Board, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization) finally selected two actions, Urban Public Transport Connectivity in Bangkok and Public Transport Management, to be further developed as two components of a proposal for a NAMA in the land transport sector in Thailand.Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) are government-initiated policies or measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to sustainable development, a new international climate instrument under the UNFCCC. For more information on the NAMA selection process in the transport sector in Thailand please see.“For the next step, I will assign all related departments in the MOT (e.g. OTP, State Railway of Thailand, Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, etc.) to work on proposal development for NAMA. A special working group set up by the committee will be working on this task together with the support from TCC,” said Mrs. Soithip.
